The London Clinic’s New Cancer Centre is ‘Top Notch’
The London Clinic’s new state-of-the-art cancer
centre reached a new high this week quite literally, when
construction of the highest point of the building was
completed.
On Wednesday 15 October a traditional “Topping
Out” ceremony was held to celebrate this important moment in the
building’s development.
Guests of The London Clinic and Shepherd
Construction, the company managing the building project and the
main contractor for the scheme, were invited onto the site of the
7,500m2 building at 60-62 Marylebone High Street and 21
– 22 Devonshire Place, in the heart of London’s Harley Street
medical community.
The “Topping Out” ceremony involved the mixing
of a special mortar brick which will be placed in a strategic
position in the new centre. Ingredients symbolising the ethos of
the cancer centre were specifically chosen for the mix. Yarrow, for
health and healing, thyme, for strength and courage, sycamore,
representing persistence, strength and endurance and finally almond
to symbolise hope.
Whilst guests enjoyed champagne and canapés
they were able to see exactly how the new cancer centre is
progressing. Due for completion in winter 2009 the project will
result in an eight storey facility with three storeys below ground
level.
The centre will ultimately comprise 47
individual bedrooms and 22 day care pods in a modern purpose built
environment. It will enhance The London Clinic’s existing oncology
services by offering the very latest progressive treatments and
developments in the field of cancer services, to include
chemotherapy, transplant and other specialised haematology/oncology
facilities. The centre will also embrace groundbreaking technology
such as the CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System.
