Low vision consultations
What is a low vision consultation
A low vision consultation is imperative for
people with a visual impairment for example those with
uncorrectable reduced vision of varying degrees caused by an eye
disorder.
Who should have a low vision
consultation
Anyone who feels that they are unable to
conduct a normal daily routine or carry out tasks that they would
like or need to do as a direct result of visual loss would benefit
from such an assessment, the goal being to maximise the useful
remaining vision a person has.
What does it involve?
The consultation is conducted by an
experienced Optometrist and initially involves a detailed
evaluation of the areas of difficulty, in terms of daily tasks and
job requirements a patient has as a result of their
vision.
This is followed by a series of tests,
involving refraction to quantify the level of remaining
vision. With this information, appropriate low visual aids in
the form of spectacles, hand and stand magnifiers, telescopic
systems and closed circuit video monitors will be demonstrated and
prescribed with full training in their usage.
In addition, advice on optimal lighting
conditions, electronic magnifiers and other adaptation techniques
along with details of appropriate further sources of information
will be given in order to allow the patient to continue with as
much of an independent life as possible.
