convenient and cost effective.
The advantages of Fibroscan® are:

- An operator-independent measurement
- Easy to use
- An anesthetic is not necessary
In expert hands
Your scan will be performed by a consultant
hepatologist or an experienced specialist nurse who will be able to
provide immediate insight into your results. The actual data
will need to be discussed in conjunction with other blood tests and
your lifestyle with a liver specialist.
How much does it cost?
The self-pay package price for a Fibroscan®
with consultation and pathology is £380.
This includes the price of the scan, pathology tests and the
consultation fee with a consultant hepatologist (liver specialist).
Additional investigations or other tests may incur an extra
cost. For a Fibroscan without a consultation, the price is
£250.
Is it covered by private medical
insurance?
The London Clinic works with all major private
medical insurance companies. If you have private medical insurance,
please contact your insurance provider and advise them of your
planned consultation. The fees for your consultation and Fibroscan®
may or may not be covered depending on your policy.
Do I need a GP referral?
Referrals should normally be made, wherever
possible, via your GP. However, we will accept direct patient
referrals.
Fibroscan® examination
process
- A mechanical pulse at the surface of
the skin triggers propagation through the liver of an
elastic wave whose velocity is
measured by ultrasound.
- The wave’s velocity is governed by the
hardness of the environment it crosses
- The stiffness of the liver directly
correlates to the level of fibrosis: the harder the liver, the
more severe the
fibrosis.
- The exam is rapid and simple: the
measurement is unequivocal and expressed in kPa. The
patient lies on his or her
back, right arm raised behind the head. The measurements are
made on the right lobe of
the liver by intercostal route using an ultrasound probe fitted
on
a vibrating system.
- The result is immediate; the total
duration of the examination is about ten minutes.
