Pancreatic disease and surgery
The London Clinic offers a comprehensive,
multi-disciplinary service for the diagnosis and treatment of all
forms of pancreatic disease. Patients receive a highly tailored
treatment for their condition and have the reassurance that, at
every stage, our internationally renowned consultants have
access to the most advanced procedures and
technologies.
Diagnostics
At The London Clinic we have state-of-the-art imaging
facilities, including multi-slice CT scanners and 'one stop'
magnetic resonance imaging for accurate diagnosis. Dedicated liver
and pancreatic radiologists perform the imaging.
We also boast one of the most experienced
gastroenterologists in endoscopic ultrasound. We use endoscopy
with biopsy and analysis of pancreatic cyst fluid to make a
diagnosis.
We are one of the few centres in the country to offer
biliary menometry to assess atypical gall bladder pain, by
measuring pressure within the bile duct and across the muscles
controlling the emptying of pancreatic juice and bile.
Treatments
Our team is highly experienced in placement of both plastic and
metal stents in the bile duct to relieve jaundice and to aid
diagnosis. We can also stent the bile duct through the liver.
The surgical team at The London Clinic are all members of
dedicated, government-approved pancreatic centres, affording our
patients the comfort of knowing that operations are performed by
world-renowned surgeons who have regular peer reviews to
assess outcomes.
Rarer tumours, which are sometimes confused with cancer,
may be removed or even left alone once diagnosed.
We have a world-leading endocrinology department to care
for patients with rare endocrine tumours of the pancreas.
We offer a full range of treatments for chronic pancreatitis,
including diabetologists and nutritionists, replacement
therapy, stenting, surgical resection and drainage procedures,
nerve blocks and pain teams to control symptoms.
Post-surgery
Pancreatic surgery is technically very difficult. Because
complications are possible the unit has a central position so that
any problems can be immediately recognised and reversed.
The London Clinic's intensive care facilities are second to
none and the operating room is equipped with every tool
required for modern pancreatic surgery, such as harmonic scalpels
and intra-operative imaging facilities.
Once recovered, patients have access to expertise in
chemotherapy treatments not available through the National
Health Service. Combination treatment of chemotherapy and radiology
can also be offered.
