Bone densitometry
Bone Densitometry or Dual Energy X-ray
Absorptiometry (DEXA) is a precise, low-dose
X-ray system used to accurately determine an individual's risk of
osteoporosis, and in cases of osteoporosis to monitor the response
to treatment.
Our
service
Osteoporosis is a disease where the bones
become brittle and may break more easily. There are no
early-warning signs. Osteoporosis affects one in three women
over 50 years of age, and more so in post-menopausal women.
It can also affect men, though less so than women.
If you fall into one or more of the following categories you may
be at risk of osteoporosis:
- You are female nearing the menopause
- You are over 45 years of age
- You had an early menopause
- You have a family history of osteoporosis
- You are on long-term steroid therapy
- Your lifestyle involves smoking, excessive drinking and
minimal exercise
Diagnosis
Bone density is measured from a scan of the bones in the lower
spine and one of your hips.
At The London Clinic a specially trained senior radiographer
performs the scan to ensure best practice is continually
achieved.
In order to proceed with a booking you will
need a signed request form from either your GP or your
consultant.
